  • Before you buy that special lot or start your renovation project, talk to an experienced builder to ensure that your dream home will suit your lot.
  • Know your contractor. Research your contractor and check out references.
  • Building or renovating a home should be a pleasurable experience:
    • Plan ahead, make sure your specifications are clearly defined before you request a quote.
    • Choose your features carefully, exterior and interior finish can easily and quickly deplete your budget.
  • When comparing quotes, make sure all specifications are included, on all quotes. Pay particular attention to the grade of construction materials.
  • Before you select a builder, make sure the builder and sub-contractors are insured ie: Workers Compensation, Liability Insurance.
  • Get it in writing. Make sure your estimate is in writing and supported by a contract before you start building.
  • The builder should always encourage homeowners to be involved as much as possible with details of the project. When building a new home or renovating existing home, it is especially important during the rough-in stage. For example, homeowners should be involved in details such as where switches and receptacles should be placed.
